Paris is definitely one of my city loves. Last week I have been there again for the 5th time in my life. But this time not as a tourist, but as a traveler trying to soak up Paris in a more authentic way.
I always loved city tripping, but with a girlfriend who feels the same it is even nicer! My dear friend and I booked a Thalys train ticket and an affordable apartment through AIRBNB, to have a real Parisian weekend in Le Marais.
Le Marais centre is easily reached by metro, just go to subway stop Saint-Paul. Here you can go left or right to all the authentic streets of Le Marais. This is in the 3rd arrondissement and close to Place de Vosges.
Every side walk in this area has a café where you can enjoy people watching, as there are still a lot of fashionable French youngsters walking around here, instead of tourists. We liked this neighbourhood because it is not so crowded yet, the architecture is beautiful, there are lovely facades all around and there is a real authentic vibe hanging around.
If you also want to experience Paris in a more authentic way, just follow our favourites:
Go to Place des Vosges for the beautiful sights, have breakfast and do some gallery shopping around the square.
Visit le Musée Picasso, a nice smaller museum in a beautiful historic building with a quiet rooftop terrace.
Walk by the Seine and enjoy the sights of the city. Buy some old books, art or souvenirs at one of the many stalls, or seal your love by adding another love lock at one of the many bridges.
If you follow the Seine south to the Louvre, you walk by many historic buildings and can see the Notre Dame from a far. Cross the street at the Pont de la Concorde to end up at les Jardin des Tuileries. Nice landscaping and the perfect setting for relaxing in the shade of the beautiful gardens with direct sights at the Louvre.
A visit to Musée D’Orsay can also be nice, you pass by this museum on the way to the Louvre. You need to be patient enough to wait in the long line before the entrance though, or arrive early to beat the crowds.
And of course…shopping:
Le Marais has the nicest shops, just walk around the side streets left and right of Rue Saint-Paul to stumble upon unique boutiques, such as:
Acne, a nice brand store with the most beautiful classics. Not cheap but classic and very good for inspiration, located near Merci, which is the next shop stop – 3 Rue Froissart.
Merci conceptstore, 3 floors filled with new and unique clothing brands, accessories, interior decoration, kitchen accessories, furniture and so on. This is a must visit when in Le Marais – 111 Boulevard Beaumarchais.
Go left after Merci at the Rue du Pont aux Choux to look for small accessory and clothing boutiques in the small streets around Rue de Turenne.
When walking towards Musée Picasso you pass by some shops with timeless basics and chique clothes for affordable prices, such as – J.Crew at 12 Rue Malher and COS at 4 Rue des Rosiers.
The famous concept store Colette, other beautiful more expensive brand shops, but also the lovely H&M store concept And Other Stories are located on Rue de Saint Honore, near the Louvre.
Besides all this we really loved our walk along the Seine and seeing the authentic sights of Paris by foot. For the perfect walk from Le Marais, along the Seine to les Jardins des Tuileries, follow below map:
